Viet Nam-Philippines mark 35 years of ties

2011 07 26 –

H.E. Nguyen Vu Tu, Vietnamese Ambassador to the Philippines, recently hosted a cocktail reception at the Grand Ballroom of InterContinental Manila to mark thirty-five years of diplomatic relations between his country and the Philippines.

The well-attended affair featured Vietnamese hors d-oeuvres as prepared by Chef Somnuck Attaworn of Charm Cham Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, who flew to Manila with his assistants for the occasion after which, guests were treated to a fabulous show of Vietnamese music and fashion with the special participation by the Dean of Philippine Fashion, Ben Farrales.

The show opened with a musical number by Doc Zung, a lithophone (Vietnamese stone xylophone) artist. This was followed by a performance by bamboo flutist, Dinh Linh, a third generation member of a famous family of bamboo flutists in Viet Nam.

Ms. Vo Ha Tram rendered songs in honor of the late Vietnamese leader and patriot, Ho Chi Minh, as well as a Tagalog and Vietnamese versions of Filipino folk singer, Freddie Aguilar’s "Anak".

Top Vietnamese designer, Le Si Hoang, presented a beautiful collection of the Vietnamese national dress for women, the ao dai. His collection was divided into three parts.

The first part showed the ao dai in its traditional silhouette. The second part consisted of contemporary interpretations while the third featured evening gowns that fused design elements from the ao dai with the Philippine terno. The collection was modeled by Filipino and Vietnamese mannequins.

For his part, Ben Farrales presented a collection of his signature Muslim-inspired creations as well as his "dalagang Pilipina" –inspired ones like a wedding gown that had cascades of fabric sampaguita blossoms.
As expected, both fashion designers received a resounding ovation at the end of the show to the delight of Ambassador Nguyen Vu Tu and his lovely wife, Tran Thi Lan Hinh.

At the Manila InterContinental Hotel where this event took place, very successful too was Vietnamese food festival held at the hotel’s Café Jeepney.

After a whole week of celebrating 35 years of friendship between Viet Nam and the Philippines, we all look forward to more activities like this in the many years to come!
